Ryan Cathie is a global trade compliance expert with a wide-ranging background in both government and industry implementation of strategic trade or export controls. For more than a decade, he has conducted strategic trade control training, analysis, and outreach for governments and industry throughout the world. He has significant regional expertise in the European Union, South Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East and has extensive experience providing guidance, support, and training for numerous governments in those regions. Mr. Cathie has assisted national governments in developing export control legal authorities, policies, procedures, control lists, and internal compliance programs. His work has focused on analyzing all aspects of the strategic trade control (STC) systems of individual countries and the relationships and differences between countries within various regions. Mr. Cathie has conducted comprehensive analyses of STC systems in numerous countries throughout Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia, including: Japan, Malaysia, India, Israel, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), South Africa, Brazil, and Mexico. 

Mr. Cathie has also worked extensively with industry in Europe and Asia to provide licensing and trade compliance support . He has assisted in the review, enhancement, and audit of internal compliance programs (ICP) at both multinational corporations and SMEs. In addition, Mr. Cathie has provided on-site export control training, as well as analytical services and customized compliance tools and resources for a range of companies. Mr. Cathie is well-versed in foreign export control lists and and maintains a firm understanding of how and where these lists deviate from one another. He has unique experience classifying goods and technologies in numerous foreign jurisdictions. 

Mr. Cathie is a regular contributor to, and listed expert, of the World Export Controls Review (World ECR), among the leading publications in the trade compliance industry, and is part of the faculty of the Export Compliance Training Institute (ECTI). He also previously served as an instructor at the Center for International Trade and Security's “Export Control Academy” in Athens, GA – a leading U.S. State Department provider of advanced strategic trade control training for government and industry officials from around the world. Finally, the consulting firm Mr. Cathie helped to establish in 2010, SECURUS Strategic Trade Solutions, was recognized as the Export Control Consultant of the Year by the World ECR in 2016. Mr. Cathie holds an M.A. in Security and Intelligence Studies from the University of Pittsburgh’s Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA) and a B.A. from Ohio University.
